Add your name to Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s open letter on abortion bans
Five U.S. states — Ohio, Mississippi, Kentucky, Iowa, and North Dakota — have passed laws outlawing abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. 16 states are considering this type of legislation, which gained in prominence in recent years as anti-abortion activists fueled debate and policy in America.
Proponents call these “heartbeat” bills, referring to the first detectable heart activity. Iowa’s Supreme Court struck down that state’s ban on Jan. 23 of this year. Opponents and reproductive rights activists counter by citing the 24-week threshold for fetal viability, as well as the fact that most women do not know they are pregnant at six weeks.
The same Reuters report cited proponents of the law who believe they need to argue their case up to the U.S. Supreme Court. Supporters argue the appointment of Judges Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh gives a favorable majority for reversing Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey to overturn federal abortion protections.
